Porn addiction symptoms

Porn addictions symptoms are similar to those that sex addicts experience. However, addiction to pornography is more acute and the symptoms are linked to one thing - the computer screen.

We use computer screen here because although porn addiction includes magazines and DVDs from a regular old sex shop, it has unquestionably been the advent of the Internet that has caused a dramatic surge in the number of those who are addicted to viewing pornography - including women.

Porn addicts show several acute symptoms including social withdrawal and mood swings
These are some common signs that a person is addiction to porn. If you think you or your partner is showing some of these signs, it may be a good idea to get treatment for porn addiction.

Social withdrawal
Porn addicts withdraw socially and have less of an interest in spending time with family and friends. The majority of there time is spent looking at the computer screen for explicit images. Often when pornography junkies are invited out they decline in order to stay home and look at porn. This includes images or videos. In extreme cases, porn addicts may even take days off work or college so that that can indulger their habit. Inevitably this leads to the loss of their job.

Excessive use of pornography
Many men and women use pornography online and the line between a pleasure and an addiction is not all together clear. However, if a person's use of pornography seems excessive then they may be an addict. Excessive could be interpreted as: viewing pornography constantly throughout the day; having several porn sites open in different tabs or windows simultaneously; or accessing pornography when in other people's homes or at work.

Mood swings
Porn creates the same emotions as any other addiction. Essentially addicts have an emotional attachment to porn on their computer, which leads to emotional volatility. Addicts are likely to have underlying emotions of depression, loneliness, irritability, frustration and anger. Sometimes they will experience highs once they have viewed the porn to get their fix. They may also feel frustrated while viewing porn that they are not getting the buzz. They may feel anxious, on-edge and stressed as they struggle to cope mentally and emotionally with the addiction. Remorse, guilt and shame also common emotions that are also shared by sex and porn addiction. However, because pornography has become more acceptable there are less of these feelings in porn addicts. This is perhaps one of the reasons that some people think they don't have a problem.

Relationship problems
Porn addicts who are married or in relationships may see a detrimental effect in this area of their lives. They are likely to become more secretive when using the computer and appear shifty to their partner. They met get suspicious or paranoid about their other-half using the PC in case they discover their secret stash of pictures. They may show less interest in sex and become physically less-interested in their partner as their mind is flooded with visions of Internet men and women. Likewise, the sex in the relationship may be affected. It could become less intimate, over quickly, or rough and angry as the person acts out what they have seen online. In everyday life, the addict is likely to be less emotionally engaged with their spouse and conversations will be short and laboured. They will show little interest in socialising together, such as easting out, going to parties, the cinema or other places that they used to enjoy together.

Physical signs
Porn addiction is almost always linked to excessive use of a computer. For this reason a pornography addict is likely to have similar symptoms as those that are linked to Internet and computer addiction. These include: a poor, slumped and hunched posture for spending too long at the computer; blurred vision and red tired eyes, aching fingers from using the keyboard and mouse too much; back, neck and shoulder ache; rapid weight gain from excessive eating and lack of exercise or conversely weight loss from not eating properly.

Chaotic and disorganised home life
Pornography addicts prioritise their time online getting their fix over almost everything else - including running the home. They are likely to have a messy room, and pots piling up in the kitchen. General personal admin tasks such as responding to letters or paying bills are likely to be ignored. They may put off doing vital jobs around the house such as cleaning or gardening.

Mysterious spending habits and debt
A porn addict's credit or debit card bill is likely to show a string of mysterious payments to unrecognisable companies. Porn providers will often disguise their name on a person's credit card bill in order to protect the privacy of that person. This makes payments for pornography difficult to trace for partners of addicts. However, if the payments are monthly that's a good sign it's going to a porn firm. In severe cases, porn addicts might overspend and run up debts as they pursue their addiction.

Sex addiction
Porn addicts may often develop an emotional frustration that they do not have the 'amazing' sex that they are seeing on screen. This can lead them to play out these fantasies by visiting prostitutes, strip bars, or having casual sex with strangers. In these cases, the symptoms of porn addiction begin to cross over with those of sex addiction. To read more about sex addiction, click here.
